James had two older brothers: Robert B. May, Jr. and William Jerfus May. James was also the older brother of Mary Jane May Beard. He also had a younger brother, William Powhatan May, born 1837 in Mississippi.
Wife: Mary Henry of Alabama. James C. May married Mary Henry in about 1849. In 1859, they had one daughter, Tabitha Allen May, named for James' mother.
James C. May enlisted in the Confederate Army in May, 1861.
He died and his body was returned to the family in Williamson County.
James' widow, Mary, married Josiah Dyches on September 10, 1863 according to researcher, Arlee Gowen. He said the marriage was recorded in Williamson County Marriage Book 2, Page 135.
James and Mary's daughter, Tabitha Allen May, married William Dyches in Williamson County, Texas. He died in a shooting in about 1890. She married a Mr. Wilson in about 1897. Tabitha Dyches died in San Angelo, Tom Green Co., Texas February 13, 1941 and is buried there.
