F.M. Havens, one of Boone's leading men and highly respected citizens died at his home, corner of Marshall and Fourth streets, Tuesday morning at 2:40 o'clock. He had been in poor health for some time and for several weeks his condition has been critical. Death was due to nervous prostration.
Francis Marion Havens was born March 2, 1846, near Columbus, Ohio, being fifty three years of age. In 1853 he removed with his parents to Taylorville, Ill. He learned the trade of a marble cutter from his father at this place. In company with his brother, J.W. Havens, he went to Sigourney, Iowa in 1869 and the two young men became publishers of the Sigourney News. Their success in the newspaper business was quite flattering and the News exerted much influence politically throughout the state. In 1872 he was married to Miss Lizzie Brockman. In 1875 they removed to this city and have since continued to reside here. First he embarked in the mercantile business but in 1877 he established the Boone Marble Works, an institution that has prospered and kept pace with the growing needs of the city. The excellent work turned out elicited much favorable comment.
No children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Havens but they adopted the three orphan daughters of his brother, J.W. Havens, and reared them to womanhood surrounded by culture and refinement. They are Mrs. Theodore Willson, Mrs. Walter Canaday and Miss Mae Havens. As a citizen Mr. Havens character was above reproach. Strictly honest he was generous to a fault, The funeral was held yesterday afternoon from his late residence. Rev. W.Y. Brown, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, officiated at the obsequies. The Odd Fellows, of whom he was an honored member, turned out in a body to the funeral. Interment was in East Linwood cemetery.
