Samuel Crowe Pottinger left this world peacefully on August 26, 2021, at Valhalla Post Acute in Louisville, Ky. He was 95 and proud of it.

Sam grew up in the Highlands of Louisville with wonderful parents and 4 sisters and one brother. He attended Male High School and delivered newspapers morning and afternoon daily which we all heard about until his last day. He joined the Navy in 1944 and proudly served for over 2 years.. Upon return, he attended UK where he graduated in 3 years. . He met and married the love of his life, Barbara Lois Eddleman, in 1949. Married over 50 years, they enjoyed a life of devoted love with two children (Trip and Kathy), many friends and much happiness. Sam and Barbara were founding members of Meadowview Presbyterian Church which is still near and dear to him even to his dying day.

Also in 1949, Mr. V.V Cooke hired Sam to sell cars for his Chevrolet dealership in downtown Louisville. Thus began an amazing auto career for Sam. He worked his way to management and made many friends and customers for life! Sam opened a used car lot in downtown Louisville in 1959. He built a good business and closed it due to Urban Renewal plans in 1969. Joining Bob Hook Chevrolet as General Manager soon after closing, Sam enjoyed helping that dealership become one of Louisville's top performing stores. In 1973, Ford Motor Company approached and offered him an opportunity to purchase a Ford dealership at Oxmoor Center. With Trip fresh out of college, they took on what became Sam Pottinger Ford at Oxmoor and for 16 years enjoyed selling and servicing cars and trucks for many. He and Barbara had many fond memories of friends made and travels taken all over the world while owning the Ford store. One of his biggest highlights was when Henry Ford Jr personally presented him with a Rolex watch for dealership sales achievement. He wore it proudly for years. Upon retirement, he enjoyed living in Florida at his condo with "The Million Dollar View". A beautiful view of both the Ocean and the Intercoastal Waterway.

Sam is preceded in death by his wife in 2002.

Remaining to cherish his memory is his son, Sam "Trip" Pottinger III, (Roxie) and his daughter Kathy Sue Butler (Allan). Grandchildren are Eric Pottinger, Whitney Jones, Morgan Terry (Steven), Christian Pottinger, Brad Butler (Brynne), and Barbie Butler. Seven great-grandchildren and several nieces fill out his legacy.

Sam always had a "dad" joke with him before they were even called that and was a regular patron and huge supporter of Churchill Downs and other race tracks. He was affectionately known at Churchill Downs as "The Vice President of Horseplayers" as his common sense approach to the sport helped both management and the horsemen whom he loved.....and he always had the joke of the day to tell. He will be missed.

Visitation will be at Highland Funeral Home at 3331 Taylorsville Rd.. Monday, August 30, 5-8PM. Visitation at 11am on Tuesday August 31, with service to follow at Highland. Burial will be at Resthaven Cemetery after service. Published by Courier-Journal from Aug. 28 to Aug. 30, 2021.
