Catherine "Kay" DeBonis, of Hermitage, passed away Sunday afternoon, August 22, 2021, in Sharon Regional Medical Center. She was 100.
Mrs. DeBonis was born March 2, 1921, in Farrell, a daughter of the late Paul and Kate (Domovitz) Carin. She was a 1940 graduate of Farrell High School.
A homemaker, Kay was employed by Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems, Elyria, OH, years earlier.
Kay was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Church, Sharon.
A beloved mother, Kay, affectionately dubbed Princessa, was a giving and selfless person who dedicated her adult life to her family. She embodied the "pay it forward" ideal when she welcomed a sister, two nephews and a niece, who became an adopted daughter, into her home, doubling the size of her immediate family.
Her family-at-large, her Dakota Street neighbors, and all of the children's friends will easily remember her as a connoisseur of homemade meals and pastries; the table of eight was often much larger. Of Croatian descent, she even mastered Italian meals for her husband to enjoy.
As mom aged, roles reversed and her family, friends, and the Womer family had an opportunity to manage her care and provide her time to do what she enjoyed: eat out more often, play Bingo, attend sporting events, and take day trips. At home, she delighted in drinking cups of coffee, observing birds, watching her rose bushes bloom, and solving Word Search puzzles. Even as she became less active, she still maintained her one constant treat of having her hair done. Comically, she always kept close tabs on her wallet, which was filled with $5 bills, in the event that she needed to issue an IOU.
In reality, she literally lived for others before herself. Everyone should have a Princessa.
Her husband of 55 years, Emedio "Jack" DeBonis, whom she married November 27, 1943, preceded her in death March 17, 1999.
Kay is survived by three daughters, Dr. Donna M. DeBonis, Hermitage; Linda M. DeBonis – Crandall (Chuck), Hummelstown, PA; and Laura J. Graves (Harold), Wimberley, TX; four grandchildren, Charlie and David (Kadee) Crandall; and Jordan and Brooklyn Graves; two great-grandchildren, Mila and Mason Crandall; the two nephews who resided with her, Kit G. Carin (Annmarie), Hermitage; and Gary J. Carin (Laura), Knoxville, TN; and additionally, many other dearly loved nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and parents, Kay was preceded in death by three sisters, Barbara Lewis, Anna Carin and Marica Carin; and four brothers, Steve, John, George and Matthew Carin.
