Richard Dwight Pittman, 73, of Sheldon, died Friday, November 16, 2007, at Iroquois Memorial Hospital in Watseka.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today at Baier Funeral Home in Watseka and from 10-11 a.m. Tuesday at Faith Lutheran Church in Watseka. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church with Pastor Michael Giese officiating. Burial will be in Sheldon Cemetery in Sheldon.

Mr. Pittman was born September 19, 1934, in Vincennes, Ind., the son of Ernest and Edna (Knoblett) Pittman. He married Barbara Fellers on December 22, 1962, in Cullom. She survives.


He was an elementary-school teacher for 37 years in Sheldon schools, with 42 total years of teaching in Illinois schools. He also painted houses during the summer for many years. He served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956 during the Korean War. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Watseka. He was a member of Sheldon American Legion Post 393 and a retired member of NEA and IEA. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, painting houses and reading. He was an avid sports fan.

Mr. Pittman is survived by his wife, Barbara Pittman, of Sheldon; son, Jeffrey Pittman and his wife, Corrinnia, of Sheldon; daughter, Anne Porter and her husband, Bradley, of Brewer, Maine; sister, Velda Balding and her husband, Max, of Olney; brothers, Delvin E. Pittman and his wife, Wanda, of Paris, and Ron Pittman and his wife, Diana, of Cloverdale, Ind.; granddaughter, McKenna Porter; step-grandchildren, Amanda Reardanz and her fiancé, Lonnie Auxier, and Dennis Reardanz; and step-great-granddaughter, Karissa Auxier.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Max Pittman.
