John Savage Craig was born January 22, 1853 in Greene County, Illinois, to Isaac and Susannah (England) Craig. He was one of thirteen children born to the Craig family. John also had eight half brothers and sisters due to his father's first marriage.

John married Eldo R. Driskell on November 28, 1875 in Newton County, Kansas. They had three children, Lillie May (who died at age 58), William T. (who died at age 2), and an infant son who died at birth. Eldorado R. Driskell Craig died in January 18, 1881, a few days after the birth of her last child.

In 1882, John married Elizabeth Emeline Worthy in Newton County, Missouri. They had one child, a daughter, Minnie, who died at the age of 25 and is buried in Sunnyside Cemetery, Caney, Kansas.

John, Emeline, and Minnie Craig lived in Newton County, Missouri until 1900 as they are shown in that year's Newton County, Missouri census records. Sometime after 1900, they moved to Copan, Washington County, Oklahoma.

John Savage Craig, 78, died July 2, 1931, in Copan, Washington County, Oklahoma. Funeral services were held and burial was in the Sunnyside Cemetery, Caney, Montgomery County, Kansas.
