Leona Catherine Ortbals, 94, Jefferson City, died Oct. 14, 2002,
at St. Joseph's Home for the Aged. She was born Dec. 26, 1907, in St.
Elizabeth, a daughter of Henry and Margaret Eicholz Bax. She was married
Sept. 25, 1933, in St. Elizabeth, to Victor Henry Ortbals, who died Jan. 18,
1989.

A former St. Elizabeth resident, she was a member of St.
Lawrence Church, St. Elizabeth. She served as church organist for St.
Lawrence Church and St. Anthony of Padua Church. She was a member of St.
Ann's Sodality in St. Elizabeth and St. Anthony. She worked for Langenberg
Hat Factory, St. Elizabeth.

Survivors include: four sons, Edgar Ortbals, Quincy, Ill.,
Marvin Ortbals, Claremore, Okla., Robert Ortbals, Lohman, and James Ortbals,
Jefferson City; three daughters, Mildred Jurgensmeyer, Tipton, Helen
Stuckenschneider, Arnold, and Joan Egbert, Columbia; two brothers, Raymond
Bax, Wellsville, and Arthur Bax, Burbank, Calif.; 28 grandchildren; and 27
great-grandchildren. One daughter, Mary Ortbals, died April 25, 1949. One
son, Donald Ortbals, died Oct. 4, 1993.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at St. Lawrence Church. The
Rev. M. Christopher Smith will officiate. Burial will be in St. Lawrence
Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Thursday at Rekus Funeral Home,
St. Elizabeth, with a prayer service at 7 p.m.
