Myrtle Nina Johnson Ostrand was born December 21, 1910 to James Chris Johnson and Matilda Fredericka Gocken. She lived in Cedar Bluffs until 1916 when she and her family moved to Ludden, North Dakota. She married Gust Otto Ostrand on December 31, 1929 in Ellendale, North Dakota and moved back to Cedar Bluffs shortly after their marriage.

Myrtle and Gust had three children: Gust Robert, Darlene Elane, and Lawrence Bernard.

At the time of her death, she was survived by her parents, four brothers (Robert, Jim, Ervin, and George), three sisters (Mary Malmberg, Hazel Miller, and Pearl Johnson), and a grandfather, Fred Gocken. Her funeral service was held at the Cedar Bluffs Presbyterian Church, presided over Reverend D.K. Miller.
