He will be respectfully remembered by his Class of 1972 classmates and other Citadel alumni, family, and friends at a Memorial service held at The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, Summerall Chapel, Friday, Nov. 4, 2022, 2 p.m.

Edward (Ed) Smoak Griffith of St. Matthews, S.C., passed away August 22, 2021, at the age of 71. Ed was born in Orangeburg, S.C., the youngest child of the late Francis "Frank" and Mary Ellen Griffith.

After finishing Orangeburg High School, he attended The Citadel and was graduated in 1972. Ed worked many years in the insurance business in Calhoun County for both Farm Bureau and Santee Insurance Company. He never met a stranger and was always up for a good conversation. Ed loved and cared for the people in the community where he lived and affectionately called everyone "his people". He enjoyed golf and being with others. Even when his health started to decline, he still followed his friends around the golf course and would not miss many of the men's cookouts.

Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of 48 years, Jane Griffith of St. Matthews; sons, Ben (Lauren) of Murrells Inlet, S.C. and Chandler (Joda) of Greenville, S.C.; his eight precious grandchildren, Mary Karr, Clara, Millie, Emerson, Henry, Knox, Fisher, and Claren; siblings, Frank Griffith (Jo) of Huntersville, N.C., Theresa Walling (Thomas) of Lexington, S.C.; sisters-in-law, Mildred Ann Freeman of Niceville, Fla., Nancy McClary (Guy) of Kingstree, S.C.; and many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 25, at Shady Grove United Methodist Church, 6122 Cameron Road, Cameron, S.C. with Pastor Larry R. Brown, presiding with the assistance of pianist Jean Miller and Cindy McKeowen provided special music. CDC guidelines for the COVID-19 virus and social distancing were observed during the service. The sanctuary was filled and there was a large over-flow crowd in the adjoining Fellowship Hall watching the funeral service via a live video feed.

Ed was an organ recipient which extended his life and the family respectfully requests that all consider becoming an organ donor to help others share more time with their loved ones. Also, in lieu of flowers, please consider memorial contributions to Shady Grove United Methodist Church or Epworth Children's Home. (Epworth Children's Home, PO Box 50466, Columbia, SC 29250 or donate on line at Give Online - Epworth Children's Home.

His remains will be inurned in The Citadel Bell Tower Columbarium on the campus of The Citadel, Charleston, S.C. at a future time in a private service by the family.
