Virgil James Leffler, 95, of 27 Vista Avenue Extension, Bradford, passed away Thursday (August 19, 2021) at UPMC Hamot Medical Center, with his daughters by his side.

Born March 23, 1926, in Eldred, he was a son of the late William and Virga (Ostrander) Leffler.

He was a 1943 graduate of Eldred High School where he was also valedictorian of his class.

On May 16, 1947, he married June (Henton) Leffler, who preceded him in death on April 11, 1981.

He enlisted in the United States Navy on Jan. 27, 1944, where he served as a Radioman achieving the rank of Petty Officer 2nd Class. James was honorably discharged on May 3, 1946.

After the service he was employed by the Pennsylvania Railroad for 20+ years. In 1969 he went to work at Kendall Refining Company and was the traffic manager. He retired in 1989 as Personnel Manager of Witco Corporation.

He was a member of the Eldred United Methodist Church, Northern Star Lodge F&AM, a 32 Degree member of the Coudersport Consistory, the Rotary Club, the Pennhills Club, and the Eldred VFW.
For many years he served on Eldred Town Council and was the former president. During that time he was responsible for the recovery effort following the 1972 flood.

Surviving are three daughters, Cathy (Michael) Silverman, of Manchester NJ; Susan (Bill) Goodman, of Lawrenceville, Ga.; and Terri (Fred) Stauffer, of Bradford; and one son, Thomas Leffler, of Shreveport, La.; eight grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. He is also survived by his personal caregiver Stephanie Connelly, Eldred.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one sister, Ella Cobb, four brothers, William, Charles, Basil, and Francis.

Services are private at the convenience of family at the Hollenbeck-Cahill Funeral Homes, Inc. with Rev. Bruce Ireland officiating, followed by Military Honors by members of the United States Navy and the Honor Guard from the American Legion. Burial will follow Lamphier Cemetery, Eldred. Memorial contributions if desired may be made to the Eldred WWII Museum.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Hollenbeck-Cahill Funeral Homes, Inc.
