Gertrude Mary Donnelly McGilvery was born on September 2, 1891 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada to Civil War veteran James Donnelly and his second wife, Mary Waugh Donnelly. Gertrude had one older half sister and three younger sisters. The family was Catholic.
Gertrude married John James Vair "Jack" McGilvery on May 17, 1919 in York, Ontario, and they became the parents of Jean May McGilvery and Madeline Gertrude McGilvery. The family was Presbyterian. Jack predeceased his wife in 1930.
Gertrude died at age 44 of pneumonia on June 19, 1936 in York, Ontario and, like her husband, is buried in Prospect Cemetery in Toronto. She is in section 22, lot 8671, without any gravestone.
