The son of Conrad & Jane Amelia (Rigg) Anne, in 1860 he was a laborer living with his family in Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.


A Civil War veteran, he served three terms of service:

1. Enlisted at the overstated age of eighteen in Lancaster August 8, 1862, mustered into federal service there August 11 as a private with Co. D, 122nd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 15, 1863.

2. Enlisted again at the stated age of eighteen in Lancaster June 27, 1863, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg July 4 as a corporal with Co. C in the six-month organization of the 21st Pennsylvania Cavalry (182nd Pennsylvana), and honorably discharged with his company February 20, 1864.

3. Enlisted for third time at the stated age of eighteen in Philadelphia July 11, 1864, mustered into federal service there July 19 as a private with Co. E, 197th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company November 11, 1864.


He married Mary Ann McCutchen September 4, 1866, and fathered John W. (b. 03/22/67), George Washington (b. 10/27/68), and Amanda Elizabeth (b. 12/23/73). Following Mary's death, he married the younger Louisa L. Schlegel April 14, 1893, in Lancaster. Cause of his death is listed as "chronic myocarditis, senile type" with "? atheroma" a contributing factor. February 21, 1847, is also reported as his birth date, but the date from his death certificate is used here.
