Alex was born in Dallas county, Alabama and shortly after his birth, moved with his family to Mina (now known as Bastrop) TX in 1837. They later moved to White's Prairie (near the present location of Elgin). About 1847, the family moved to a place on the Yegua Springs, a few miles northeast of Elgin, built cabins and dug out the springs there. The place later became known as Sam Smith Springs, named after Alex's older brother. The family donated the land for the Sam Smith Springs Cemetery (now known as Lawhon Springs Cemetery) when their father, John L. Smith died. John was the first person buried in the cemetery. This property was later sold to David Lawhon and was been renamed Lawhon Springs Cemetery.
On 8 Feb 1866, Alex married Martha Ann Tyler in Bastrop. Alex had made his living as a black smith and, according to the 1900 census was a mill engineer.
Alex died in Lee County, TX.
