Alex was born in Williamsport, Pennsylvania and raised in Trout Run, Pa. He went to Liberty High School where he excelled in basketball and track.
Growing up, his dream was to be a door gunner on a Huey (helicopter). After graduating high school in 1970, he enlisted in the US Army. He completed a tour of duty in Vietnam with the 101st Airborne Division at Camp Eagle as a door gunner on a Huey, fulfilling that dream.
On his return from the war, he met Becky (his now wife) and two weeks after dating, asked her to go to Alaska with him. Being from Tennessee, she laughed. They were married ten months later on February 27, 1974. They started their first adventure with Army orders to Ft Wainwright, Alaska and began building a life together that includes having two sons. His 25-year career in the Army saw duty stations in Ft. Sill, Oklahoma, Ft. Campbell, Kentucky, Ft. Drum, NY (and, of course returning to Ft. Wainwright in between each one). Highlights of his Army career included being part of the Night Stalkers, a Special Operations Aviation Regiment and part of two Medivac Units. In February 1991, Alex was part of Operation Desert Storm, sent to assist the 3rd Armored Division with their helicopter air support in Iraq. He was a highly respected and decorated NCO.
After retiring from the Army in October 1995, he helped start up Ft. Knox Gold Mine as a Control Room Operator, working there for five years. He then went to work for the Department of Defense as a Range Safety Officer at Ft. Wainwright Range Control. He retired in 2017.
Alex and Becky have owned and operated Pleasant Valley Store and the Two Rivers Post Office since 2004.
Alex led a full and active life, making the most of what Alaska has to offer. He and his family personally built their home off Chena Hot Springs Road. He was an avid outdoorsman, successfully hunting moose and caribou to keep their freezers full. In addition to annual family trips to the Russian and Kenai Rivers, Alex fished nearly every lake, river, and stream in Interior Alaska. He taught his children and grandchildren everything he learned from all his adventures and mishaps, instilling in them his love for Alaska.
He embraced the spirit of Alaska and for a time took up dog mushing, even running a couple of mid-distance races. Alex's Alaska dream was completely fulfilled.
In 2009, Alex was diagnosed with Pulmonary & Cardiac Sarcoidosis and was given two years to live. With steroid treatments and heart medication, the disease went into remission. He came back healthy and active to continue his adventures. During this time, they built a cabin in a remote area of Alaska, a 40-year dream of theirs, and started on a second one. In August 2020, the disease started up again and slowly took over his heart. He died peacefully at FMH on August 7, 2021.
