He was born to Luther and Norma (Manzelman) Althoff. On Aug. 21, 1955, he married Barbara J. Gross, and she survives in Lima.
Also surviving are a daughter, Becky Lynne (Kevin) Messick, Boca Raton, FL; a grandchild, Phillip S. Messick, Boca Raton, FL; a sister, Martha A. Althoff-Baber; many special nieces and nephews; and many great-nieces and great-nephews.
Deceased are a son, Jamie; and a brother, Kenneth.
Mr. Althoff was a 1951 graduate of Blume High School in Wapakoneta. He retired from Duff Truck Lines after 33 years as a truck driver. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict from 1951 to 1954 as a sergeant. He was a lifelong member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1275, where he was Senior Vice Commander, and a member of the V.F.W. Honor Guard. He was also a member of the Cooties and a board member of the Mens Bowling Association for 25 years. He enjoyed fishing, NASCAR, Ohio State Buckeyes football and making crafts. He attended Lima Baptist Temple and also attended the First Church of the Nazarene for 40 years. He was an organ donor.
Funeral services at the Lewis Chapel of Chiles-Laman Funeral Homes in Lima, with the Revs. Gary Hohman and Bill Williams officiating.
