Lincoln-Rev. Vaughn Winfield McKenney went home to be with the Lord October 3, 2017. "We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord" II Corinthians 5:8.
Vaughn was born October 31, 1918 in Island Falls, the son of Herbert R. McKenney and Agatha (Freve) McKenney.
He grew up in Lincoln and was also known as "Joe" and "Peanut". He was a Boy Scout, a youth newspaper carrier for the Bangor Daily News, a high school football player and graduated from Mattanawcook Academy.
He was the Maine flyweight boxing champion in 1937, enlisted in the CCC's and a veteran of World War II. He lived in 5 different states and was a minister, teacher and the pastor for numerous churches. He also worked as a machinist for many years. He loved hunting, fishing, camping and many outdoor activities. He is survived by his wife of 76 years, Harriet B. (Austin) McKenney of Lincoln, daughters Gail L McCafferty of Bangor, Jolene Caron of Lincoln, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
One of his favorite Bible passages was Job 19:25-26-"For I know my redeemer liveth and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth; And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God."
The family wishes to thank the Colonial Healthcare staff and Beacon Hospice for their kind and loving care and a special thank you to the special activities of Ray and Shirley and all the church services he attended. A graveside service will be held 1 pm Monday October 9, at Lincoln Cemetery with the Rev. Terry Upcott officiating.
