ADVANCE - Mrs. Mary Fowle Perry Vance, 95, died Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2004, at her home in Bermuda Village. She was born July 21, 1909, in Scotland Neck to John D. Perry and Julia Dunn Perry.

Mrs. Vance spent most of her life in Winston-Salem. She graduated from UNC-Greensboro, where she also received a master's degree in library science. She did additional graduate work at Columbia University.

After retiring from the Winston-Salem school system, she worked at the Baptist Hospital information desk for 13 years, then for All Points Research. Mrs. Vance was an active member of First Baptist Church throughout her life.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Henry Vance; her sister, Ione Perry Nicholson;
and her brother, John D. Perry Jr.

She is survived by her son, Gerald Vance of Carolina Beach; her grandson, Gerald Vance Jr. of Wilmington; nieces Jan N. Assimos and husband Dean of Winston-Salem and Pat P. Moser of Chestertown, Md.; and nephews Frank C. Nicholson Jr. and wife Marianne of Clemmons, David Burtner and wife Bette and Tiny Burtner of Greensboro. She also had nine great-nieces and great-nephews; and four great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 25, in the main sanctuary of First Baptist Church, 501 W. 5th St. Family members will receive friends after the service in the Brown Memorial Room at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Pastor's Discretionary Fund, First Baptist Church, 501 W. 5th St., Winston-Salem, NC 27101.
