"Wilna" is set on the bank of the Rappahannock River about 450 feet from the waters edge and is just below Sharps in Richmond County Va at the mouth of Farnham Creek. It is a noted Ante-bellum home of the Chinn Family. It was built by Joseph William Chinn and his wife Mary about 1825-30. Wilna was given its Polish name because of sympathy for the people of Poland at the time and for the same reason the seat of Richmond County was named Warsaw. The estate is part of the original Farnham grant of 5,350 acres made to Colonel Moore Fauntleroy on May 22, 1650 signed by Sir William Berkley (Then Lancaster Co now Richmond Co). The large brick dwelling has massive three foot fooundation walls, spacious rooms and high ceilings. Each room contains a fireplace, including the third floor, all of which are used today. The carved mantels are of pine and black walnut. The timbers used in construction are also of pine and walnut. The bricks used in its construction and in that of the outside kitchen were burned on the place. All outside lentils are of wood and the molding is of cable design. On May 27 1889, Wilna was conveyed by Joseph William Chinn, Jr and second wife Josephine I. Chinn to Ira Contant and Herbert Schoomaker (first wife being Gabriella Brockenbrough). May 14, 1896 Wilna consisting of 416 acres was conveyed to L. W. Scrimger and wife Ella E. by Ira Contant and wife and George Contant and wife. (Schoomaker sold interest to George Contant) for the sum of $4,200. -From Wilna by Virginia Drewry McPhearson.
