Mike Marvin "Ma" Boyd -
April 03, 1948-October 31, 2005

Mike Marvin Boyd was born in Phillipsburg, Kansas, April 03, 1948, to Patricia and Frank Boyd, Jr. He was raised in Speed, Kansas and attended the two-room school house there through the six grade. While a junior at Phillipsburg High School, he met Annea Louise Roberts, who had moved to Phillipsburg her senior year.

After attending Kansas Wesleyan University for a year, Mike followed Annea to Yakima, Washington and on April 3, 1968, they were married in the Phillipsburg Methodist Church, in Kansas. The couple stayed in Speed for the summer, where Mike worked at the Coop grain elevator and then they moved back to Yakima to be near Annea's mother.

In the spring of 1969, Mike took his first firefighting position with the USFS, Gifford-Pinchot National Forest, in Cougar, Washington. 1970 found Mike working in Snoqualmie National Forest at White Pass, Washington. In August 1970 a son was born, followed by two more sons, 1972 and 1976, then a daughter in 1979, all being born in Yakima.

From White Pass, Mike accepted a position with the Bureau of Land Management at the Boise Interagency Fire Center, Boise, Idaho. Here he became part of a fire management team that was on call to fight wild land fires throughout the United States. As a member of these teams he traveled to fight fires in Alaska, California, Oregon, Michigan, Arizona and more. From Boise to Miles City, MT. and back to Yakima. In the fall of 1979 the family moved to Battle Mountain and then to Winnemucca, NV., where the family settled for 14 years, until the children were out of school. During this period Mike served as the Fire Control Officer for the Winnemucca District while continuing to serve as an Incident Management Team member for the Great Basin Region and continued fighting fires all over the United States. Also at this time, because of his overseeing, care and concern for his teams, his friends and co-workers gave Mike the nick name of "Ma" Boyd.

Mike and Annea moved twice more before he retired. First to Las Vegas, NV. as the manager of the Las Vegas Interagency Communications Center. Then when it came time to leave fire (mandated at age 55) they moved back to Winnemucca, where Mike was Burn Area Emergency Rehabilitation Manager for the Battle Mountain/Winnemucca Districts, where he finished out his career in 2004. They then moved back to Las Vegas to be near their daughter and were looking forward to spending time with their six grandchildren, scattered from Oregon to Connecticut.

Mike served as a member of the Humboldt Volunteer Ambulance Corp, in Winnemucca as an EMT II, EMT Cardiac qualified, & EMT Instructor. He was part of the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation, a lifetime member of the NRA, AARP and National Active Retired Federal Employees. He found particular pleasure in instruction and mentoring the many young firefighters throughout his career. He also loved hunting, fishing and cooking for his many friends and family.

Mike is survived by his wife, their four children; six grand children, of Ledyard, CT., Aumsville, OR., and Las Vegas, NV.; his two brothers and their families, of Speed, KS.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank, Jr. and Patricia Boyd; grandparents, Frank Sr. and Bernice Boyd; and Elmer and Leota Parker, all of Speed, KS.; and a granddaughter, Alexander Grace Marchand.
