James T. Laird passed away at the St. Helena Sanitarium of dropsy on May 10, 1907. Mr. Laird spent his boyhood in Susanville where he learned the printer's trade. He later moved to Alturas and started the old Modoc Independent along with the late Dan Slater. Mr. Laird was a prominent Republican and also State Senator, town trustee and postmaster. In addition he was the proprietor of a drug and general notions store. Active in various fraternal activities, he was also a past-master Mason. He leaves his aged mother, Mrs. Hosselkuss, and half brother, Sheriff C. E. Emerson, both residents of Susanville. Beloved husband of Sarah
