Basil Boteler
Died peacefully on May 23, 2021. He was 94 years old. He is survived by Cynthia Desmond, his beloved companion for many years in later life. Basil is also survived by his sister, Margaret Shelley, and 14 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Basil D. Boteler; his mother, Dorothy Rohrer Boteler; his sisters, Alice Nunez and Sidney Worthington; and his brother, George Boteler. Basil was born and raised in Georgetown (Washington, DC). He graduated from Western High School and received a degree in engineering from George Washington University. He made a career designing and building mechanical systems for commercial facilities in the Washington area and around the world. Basil was a master boat-builder and sailor, a world traveler, a lover of opera, a serious and successful casino card player, an avid fan of the Redskins, and a kind and attentive uncle to his many nieces and nephews. Donations in Basil's name can be made to the Fisherman's Museum in Reedville, Va., where Basil instructed many young people in the skills of boat-building. A service to remember Basil will be held on Saturday, June 5, 10 a. m. at Grace Episcopal Church, 303 South Main Street, Kilmarnock, VA. A reception will follow.
