Ely (Clarence or Christian) Johnson
June 24,1905 - March 24,2003
A lifetime resident of Meagher County, Ely C. Johnson, passed away at Mountainview Medical Center on March 24 of natural causes at the age of 97 years, 9 months.
Ely was born at the ranch home between Govan and Wilbur, Washington to Coleman Brown Johnson and Mary Pruitt Johnson on June 24,1905.
He came to Montana with his parents in 1914 at age of nine going to the Butte Creek Ranch.
He attended school in Govan, Washington in his early years and finished his education at the Sheep Creek School near his ranch home in Meagher County.
He and Phyllis McGrady were married in White Sulphur Springs on June 8, 1932. They later divorced. Two children were born to this union, Mary and Donald. On May 17,1938 he was united in marriage with Gladys G. Short. They spent nearly 65 wonderful years together. They had four children, Phoebe, Douglas, Kathleen and Linda.
Ely farmed and ranched the early years of his life. In 1950 he became a rural mail carrier, his route ran from White Sulphur Springs Post Office to Lingshire Post Office on Rock Creek. He retired in 1982.
His hobbies were growing his vegetable garden and woodworking.
Ely is survived by his wife Gladys and five children, Mary Steffen of White Sulphur, Donald (Noreen) Johnson of Missoula, Phoebe (Clyde) Persons of Deer Lodge, Kathleen (Steve) Russell of Ames, Iowa and Linda (Ron) Gollehon of Townsend; 23 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren, three
great-great grandchildren and numerous
nieces and nephews.
Ely was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather, and enjoyed spending time with his family.
He was preceded in death by a son, Douglas Johnson; three brothers, Chester Allen Johnson, Ralph Ward Johnson and Ray Randall Johnson and one sister, Eula Fae (Johnson) Conrad.
Services were held Saturday, March 29, at the American Lutheran Church with Rev. Ken Olson officiating. Music was by; Barbara Blair as organist, Kathleen Russell as soloist and Steve Russell on trumpet. Serving as pallbearers were Jim Young, Clyde Persons, Phil Harmon, Guy Chriske, Steve Russell and Ray (Bud) Johnson, Jr.
Burial was in Mayn cemetery.
Twichel Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
