Elizabeth was the daughter of Abraham S. and Jane (Vines) Harbarger, who were married August 3, 1795, in Augusta County, Virginia, where Elizabeth grew up and married on January 5, 1819, to Stephen Mayfield. Her surname was spelled "Hardbarger" both on her marriage record in 1819, and as the census takers wrote her father's name the following year in 1820. The Harshbarger/Hershberger family was also in Augusta County at that time. Other sources claim Abraham spelled it "Harbarger." And, it was "Hartbarger" on her son Barney Henry's 1928 death certificate.

Stephen and Elizabeth emigrated to Saline County, Missouri between 1829 and 1830. They were enumerated together with their growing family in the U.S. Census for Saline County in 1830, 1840, 1850 and 1860. They did not appear in the Slave Schedules of any Census, so they were not slave owners.

Elizabeth's namesake daughter, four years as Mrs. Neahmiah Nelson Dille, died on 9 Mar 1859, and was buried in the Fish Creek Cemetery (est. 1842), Gilliam, Saline County, Missouri.

Elizabeth died on 4 July 1861 per one Ancestry.com tree (no primary source cited)., just a few months after the outbreak of the Civil War. She, like her daughter, was buried in Fish Creek Cemetery near Gilliam, Miami Township, Saline County, Missouri.
