Jean was born the youngest of the five children of Dick and Nora Blackwell on their farm at Stone Hill. She graduated from Bunker High School in 1952. Shortly after, she met and married Eddie Thomas in February 1953. They had lived in St. Louis for a short when Eddie went into the service and was sent to Korea. Jean returned to Stone Hill to live and wait for the birth of their first child, Michelle. After Eddie's discharge, they moved to High Ridge, Mo., where Eddie began building their first home. They couldn't wait for Eddie to finish, so the basement of their new home was named the "pink house" and they happily moved in. The birth of their second child, Chester happened in 1957, followed by Marianne in 1958 and Jacqueline in 1960. Rebecca was born in 1965 after Eddie completed building another house close by. Eddie worked at A&P as a diesel mechanic and Jean was a fulltime mother and homemaker.
In 1967, Eddie and Jean bought land west of Salem and they moved their family to the farm. Jean's life was full of family, cooking, fishing, gardening, loving and caring for all of those who were in her path. Her children are a tribute to her determination, steadfastness and strength. Her grandchildren will carry her unwavering love for them for the rest of their lives.
