William W. Sharp was born about 1765 in Orange Co., North Carolina. He was the son of John George Sharp (1722-1789) and Anna Marie Loy (1735-1777).

John George Sharp, Williams's father, was an immigrant from Germany. His German name was Johann Georick Scharp. At the age of 16 John arrived in Philidelphia, Pennsylvania (Sept. 16, 1738) on the ship St. Mark with his parents and siblings. Anna Marie, William's mother, is also thought to have been a German immigrant. Both of William's parents are buried in the Mt. Zion Christian Church Cemetery in Orange Co., NC.

William married Catherine Graves (1770-1840) in May of 1789 in Montgomery Co., Virginia. They were married for about 50 years and had eleven known children, possibly more. They were Sarah Sharp (1790-1881), Mary "Polly" Sharp (1791-1860), Christian Sharp (1792-1874), Elizabeth Sharp (1794-1879), Daniel Sharp (1797-aft 1850), Isaac Sharp (1799-1890), William W. Sharp Jr. (1805-1891), Jane Sharp (1807-1891), Henry Thomas Sharp (1808-1985), Anna sharp (1812-1901) and Catherine Sharp 1812-abt 1945).

Catherine was born in Orange Co., NC. She was the daughter of Sebastian Boston Graves (1747-1842) and Sarah Efland (1747-1842). Both of Catherine's parents were born in Berks Co., Pennsylvania. By 1830 they had migrated to Claiborne Co., Tennessee. They are buried in Corryton, Knox Co., Tennessee in the Boston Graves Cemetery.

William died on Mar. 11, 1840 in Powell Valley, Claiborne Co., TN at the age of 75. He was buried in the Sharp Cemetery located in Speedwell, Claiborne Co., TN.

William's wife Catherine is also thought to have died around 1840, about the age of 70. She too, was buried in the Sharp Cemetery, next to her husband William.

Both William and Catherine have a new marker, however, Catherine's death date on her new marker is probably incorrect. Notice that their original headstones are nearly identical and have about the same degree of deterioration. It is likely that they were placed about the same time, not 35 years apart.
