Obituary:Austin Fallis Stitt dies in his Nintieth Year, May 12, 1928.End
came to Civil War Veteran and prominent citizen last Saturday.
He was one of Nodaway County's oldest citizens and for many years a man of
leadership and prominence in Burlington Junction and community; died at his
home in this place at 12:45 P.M. Saturday ,May 12, at the age of 90 years, 7
months, 14 days. Mr. Stitt had been in failing health for several years, but
until a few weeks ago had been more or less active
and had made his almost daily trips to town. For the past few weeks he had
been suffering from the results of a paralytic stroke,and a great fight
against unsurmountable odds.

He was born in Hamilton County, Indiana on September 28, 1838, and was the
son of Obadiah and Lucinda Fallis. His father came to Nodaway County in 1856
and located near the then small village of Burlington Junction, Mo. where he
entered a claim from the government.On the farm Mr. Stitt spent the days of
his boyhood and youth.
When the Civil War began he heard the call of duty and enlisted in Company
E.,6th Missouri Regiment in 1861.At the end of the enlistment, he reinlisted
in the Army at St. Joseph in 1864 and served until the close of the War. He
was mustered out at St. Louis, Missouri in June 1865.
For a year he engaged in buying cattle and had as a partner, Captain Grigsby.
Mr. Stitt was married in the fall of 1866 to Miss Caroline McClellan. They
settled in Green Township on a farm and lived there,until 1886 when they
moved into Burlington Junction. Mr. & Mrs. Stitt had no children of their
own, but they were instrumental in rearing fourteen and many of these have
grown to useful men and women and honor the name of their foster parents. He
is survived by a brother, William Stitt of California and a brother
in-law, Luther Richardson of Lenexa, Ks. Mrs. Stitt died on December 20, 1920.
Mr. Stitt was keenly interested in public affairs and was called several
times to offices of public service. He served as postmnaster for ten years
during President Grant's administration, and served three terms as Mayor of
Burlington Junction. He took the U.S. Census in 1890 and again in 1900.
He was a member of the I.O.O.F and A.F. and A.M. Lodges, and was a member of
the G.A.R. He and his wife were members of the Christian Church and he served
as an elder since 1867. He was loyal to his church and its teaching and held
high esteem of the community because.of..a.trustful life.. He was practical,
firm in his convictions, had positive opinions, but charitable in his views.
The funeral was held at the Christian Church, Monday. afternoon conducted by
the pastor, Frank R. Gillihan. Because of rain The Masonic services were held
in the Church, following the sermon. Burial was in the OHIO cemetary, in
that town.
