Henry Harjo Jr. born June 14, 1947 in Claremore, OK, left this turtle island we call earth to journey across the waters on July 16, 2021 at the age of 74 in his Edmond, Oklahoma home with his spouse, Rachelle. Henry was the son of Mary Jayne Harjo (Samuels) and Henry Harjo Sr and late brother Charles Anthony Harjo of Wichita, Kansas and late son Jair Harjo of Edmond, OK. He was a proud enrolled citizen of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation and tribal affiliation with the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma.
Henry was a United States Navy Veteran formally assigned to the Naval Security Group from 1968 to 1972 during the Vietnam Era. He served aboard United States ships – Palm Beach and Sellers. During this military career, his service tours and cruises to foreign seas and countries included Mediterranean, Aegean Sea, American Virgin Islands, Scotland, England, Guantanamo Bay Cuba and Southeast Asia.
Henry served as a member / committeeman to the Comanche War Dance Society, Comanche War Scouts, Albuquerque War Shield and Gourd Society, Diver Control Specialist Instructor for Scuba Schools International, Sault Ste. Marie Elks, Albuquerque, New Mexico Masonic Lodge as a 32 degree, Scottish Rite of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and retired federal employee with Bureau of Indian Affairs of 31 years in Accounting.
Henry lived his life to the fullest with his family, his friends, traveling and his many life enjoyments. He traveled the world scuba diving from Egypt to Australia to Mexico to Honduras to Cuba to Fiji to Malaysia and to many other beautiful sites since 1999. He was passionate about his Native culture, as a Straight and Gourd dancer, where he traveled to share his passion with his friends and family. In his traditions, he took great pride in sharing his heritage to the younger generations especially his children and the children of the Edmond Public Schools with his late son, Jair Harjo.
Henry was also involved intensely with his son Jair Harjo in Tae Kwon Do, football, basketball, baseball, track, fencing and carrying on his family traditions of the love and involvement of sports as he enjoyed growing up (Harjo-Johnson teams as he called them).
Henry is survived by his wife, Rachelle Harjo, son Jerry Girod Harjo, wife Cynthia, daughter Maria Gillespie, husband Bill, son Michael Samudio, daughter Anitra Harjo, son Jonnathan Harjo, stepson Anthony Dobey, wife McKinzie Dobey, and stepdaughter Jessica Dobey and many other members of extended family.
Funeral services will be held at 9:00 A.M., Thursday July 22, 2021, at First Assembly of God Church in Guthrie, Oklahoma with Pastor Don Gatlin and Pastor Legus Harjo of First Indian Baptist Church officiating. Interment will be held at 2:00 P.M. at Fort Sill National Cemetery in Elgin, Oklahoma.
