MRS. JNO. R. DANCE DEAD
Funeral services over the remains of Mrs. Jno. R. Dance, who died at "Greenwood," her country home at Hickory Grove, on Wednesday night of last week, were held at the Trenton Baptist church Friday morning at 11 o'clock, immediately after which interment was made at Oakland cemetery. Services at the funeral were conducted by the pastor, O. W. Taylor, assisted by the Rev. J. A. Bell of Brazil, and the crowd of relatives and friends which attended capacitated the commodious auditorium of the church. The chancel rail and the entire front of the altar was covered with beautiful floral offerings, which attested in language more eloquent than words, the love and the esteem in which the departed wife, mother and friend was held by the people of her community and county.
A number of specially selected musical programs were rendered in an appropriate and impressive manner. The choir members were Messrs. H. A. Yandell, Earl Greer, Mesdames J. W. Moore, H. A. Yandell, L. W. Smith and Misses Robbie Wilson and Lindsey Spight.
Several months ago Mrs. Dance suffered a severe stroke of paralysis. Since that time she had been in a very delicate state of health, and though under the care of a physician most of the time she had been unable to leave her home. On Wednesday morning of last week she was again stricken, her death resulting within a short time.
She was one of the prominent women of this section and respected throughout the county for her generous nature and for her many other traits of character.
She was born in 1847 at Fairfield, Bedford county, Tennessee, and was a daughter of Dr. Matthew Hillsman, formerly pastor of the Baptist church here, and was one of the pioneer preachers of Gibson county.
At the age of 14 years she professed faith in Christ and became a member of the First Baptist church at Jackson. Later she united with Hickory Grove church, where for many years she was one of it's most active and valued members. For the past five years she held membership with the Trenton Baptist church.
Mrs. Dance was a woman of sympathetic disposition and was loved by all who knew her. She was a devoted wife, a tender and affectionate mother and a true friend.
Besides her husband, Capt. Jno. R. Dance, she is survived by seven daughters - Mrs. H. W. Bandy of Hickory Grove, Mrs. Robert E. Ross of Trenton, Mrs. Frank C. Flowers of New Orleans, Mrs. Hillsman Dance of New Orleans, Mrs. Russell Dance of Corinth, Miss., and Misses Annie Laurie and Georgia Dance, who are at home; a son, Drury Dance, who is also at home, and a stepson, Russell Dance of Corinth, Miss.; one brother, William Hillsman, recently of Arkansas, and Mrs. Harvey Harwood of Dyersburg.
Those acting as pall bearers were Russell and Drury Dance, H. W. Bandy, Rev. Frank C. Flowers, Russell Bandy, and Robt. Ross.
