James Andrew was the son of Charles and Mary (Holden) Andrew, Jr. There are several Rhode Island birth records confirming this. He is also mentioned in his father's will, dated January 17th, 1809, along with six brothers (Sylvester, Holden, John, Jonathan, Thomas and Lory/Lowry) as well as his deceased sister Elizabeth (Andrew) Pierce. James is also a signatory to the probate paperwork associated with his father's will. Therefore, he was still living at that time (March 13th, 1810).

There is a Rhode Island record listing a James Andrew in West Greenwich, RI in 1774 with two household members, one male and one female, both over the age of 16. At this time, James would have been roughly 27 or 28. Since I'm convinced that James is the father of my 5th Great-Grandfather, Caleb Andrew (1774 - 1856), this household member count of solely James and, most likely, his wife, makes sense if this record was taken prior to April 24th, 1774, Caleb's date of birth.

Another Rhode Island census-like document names "James of Charles Andrew" living in Coventry, RI in 1777. The specific association with his father Charles leaves little doubt that this is the James Andrew in question. However, there is no count of household members or ages indicated.
