He enlisted in the military on August 19, 1862 in Berlin Township, St. Clair Co., MI. He was in Company E of the 5th Michigan Cavalry. He was on active duty until he was severely injured when his horse stumbled and fell on him during a charge, near Culpepper Court House in Virginia. He was admitted to the Lincoln Hospital, Washington, D.C. on the 17th of October 1863, and discharged as medically unfit for further service on July 24, 1864.
