James was a shoe rivetter. He and his wife, Ann Bell, were both born in Cambridgeshire, then married and settled in Leicester. Ann and James were the parents of Alice Mary Lodge Smith(widow of John Lodge and wife of Thomas Smith), Eliza, Ernest Edward ( or Edwin), James Urban, Anne Maria, unnamed infant daughter Barker, and Arthur Henry Barker.

The Barker family lived on Park Street in Leicester for decades beginning from (at least) 1871 until sometime after 1911.
