Claiborne M. Ball (Age 94)
Of Montgomery County, MD died peacefully on July 5, 2021, surrounded by loved ones. He is survived by his son, Claiborne Spence Ball (Cathy Ruppert) of Silver Spring, his daughter Meriwether Ball of Portsmouth, VA, and grandson Allen Strickland Conlon of Newport News, VA. He was born December 24, 1926, in Portsmouth, VA to Claiborne White Ball and Emma Paul Kirk Ball. He graduated from Chuckatuck High School in 1944. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1945 and graduated bootcamp on "VJ Day". He then returned to Virginia Polytechnic Institute (now Virginia Tech) and completed his B.S. in mechanical engineering. He returned to Portsmouth and lived in the Port Norfolk section while earning another degree from William and Mary (now Old Dominion University). He worked as an estimator several years for Thurston and Sons, Norfolk, where he met his wife, Willette Spence, whom he married in Norfolk in 1960. They moved to Philadelphia while he earned his M.S. in economics from the University of Pennsylvania. In 1962 his family moved to Montgomery County (first Takoma Park, then Bethesda, then Rockville) where he resided until his death. He worked for the Dept. of Labor then the Department of Commerce, Bureau of Economic Analysis, ultimately leading the team of economists preparing and publishing the five-yearly gross national product. He retired after 30 years of government service. After his marriage, he was engaged to Jane Ring Crane, who died suddenly in 1985. He was a lifelong learner and took countless continuing education classes at Montgomery College, Prince Georges Community College, American University, and University of Maryland, even well into his eighties. He travelled the world and enjoyed staying many months at time in Paris, his favorite city. His remains will be interred during a graveside service with military honors at the church of his family and ancestors, St. John's, (Chuckatuck) Suffolk, VA on July 17, 2021, at 11 a.m. A remembrance social will be held in Silver Spring, MD at an upcoming date.
