Michael was the second of five children born to Gideon Martin and Anna Weber.

Michael was married three times. His first wife was Annie Hatherley, whom he married on October 26, 1895, in Brussels, Huron County, Ontario. The couple lived near Heidelberg, Wellesley Township. A daughter, Rosanna, was born on July 28, 1901. Annie died from "cardiac dropsy" on August 28, 1901, a month after giving birth.

Michael's second marriage was to Mary Haack, a daughter of Charles and Dorothea (Tiedt) Wood, and the widow of William Wesley Wood. Michael and Mary were married on September 25, 1906, in Berlin (now Kitchener), Ontario.

Michael's third wife was Catherine "Kate" Ludwig, the widow of Frederick Stoll. The couple was married on October 28, 1926, in Petoskey, Michigan.

After the death of his third wife, Michael returned to Ontario from Michigan. He died in Kitchener on June 5, 1954, at the age of 80 years.
