Clergyman, Author, and Geologist. He published "Stones of the Valley" (c.1857), "Old Bones, or Notes for Young Naturalists" (c.1861), and "Records of the Rocks" (c.1872) which were highly regarded in the science community and popularized public interest in rocks and minerals. He wrote forty-three papers in scientific journals which included his studies in botany, naturalism and paleontology. His research changed the opinion on the age of crystals found in Malvern Hills and fossilized reptiles in Elgin sandstone. Symonds authored two popular historical romance novels, "Malvern Chase" (c.1877) and "Hanley Castle" (c.1883.) He graduated from Cambridge University in 1842 and was appointed rector of Pendock parish, a position he held for 42 years until his death in 1877. His vast collections of fossilized Pleistocene mammals were donated to museums throughout England.
