Melissa (Long) Miller was born on October 16, 1892 in Hermitage Springs, Tennessee, the daughter of George Washington "G W" Long Jr (1861–1935) and Virginia (Turner) Long (1869–1952).

She attended schools in Clay County and moved to Nashville in 1909. She was married in 1911 to William Byrd Miller (31 Oct 1880–Nov 1977) of McKenzie. They lived in Chickasaw County, Mississippi for many years and moved back to Nashville in 1934.

A member of Hermitage Springs Church of Christ and living at 1320 Greenfield Avenue, Melissa was 60 years old and married when she died on May 19, 1953 at Mid-State Baptist Hospital after being ill for a month.

Survivors included her husband William, daughters Mrs George E Smith, Mrs C L York, Mrs William T Gray, Mrs Victor W Jordan and Miss Charlotte Miller of Nashville, sons Dr William L Miller of Auburn, Alabama, George R Miller of Cedar Rapids, David Granville Miller and Joseph A Miller of Nashville, sisters Mrs Frank Gonzales of Nashville, Mrs Hershel Grissom and Mrs Carlos Green of Hermitage Springs, and six grandchildren.

Funeral Services were held at Phillips-Robinson Funeral Home on May 20th, and burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery, Madison {city, not county}.
