Gist, Jeannine, 85, of Midwest City, died 7-10-2021 Born 8-26-1935 in San Antonio, Texas to Ann Catherine Gilbertson and Harold Albert Gilbertson
Jeannine graduated from Midwest City High School in 1953. She earned a bachelor's degree with honors in Business Education from the University of Oklahoma in 1975 and a master's degree in 1979. Jeannine taught at Rose State College from 1977 to 1980 and then worked at Tinker AFB retiring in 1997.
Jeannine married JL Gist Jan 31, 1954 which lasted for 63 years. She was a devoted full-time wife and mother of five daughters for 17 years before deciding to attend college. Jeannine and JL were long time members of the First Christian Church of Midwest City. They took many cruises and vacations together, as well as attended the MWC Senior Citizens Center. At the center, Jeannine enjoyed many friends, dancing, and playing Pinochle. After the death of their beloved daughter, Karen Gist Carr, who was killed in the OKC bombing, Jeannine served on several OKC Memorial committee meetings. She helped chose the final design for the outdoor memorial and helped select the artifacts and other items for the museum. Jeannine toured President Clinton around the OKC outdoor memorial before the dedication in 2000. She gave a speech representing the families of the victims during that dedication. Jeannine also toured President Bush through the OKC Memorial Museum in 2001. Jeannine, JL, and daughters Peggie and Lynne went to Washington DC with other victim family members to lobby congress for legislative changes to the judicial system.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, JL; her daughter Karen Gist Carr: parents Ann Schneider Gilbertson and Harold Albert Gilbertson; brothers Harold Allen Gilbertson and James Charles Gilbertson. Jeannine is survived by daughters Shirley Ward, Peggie Pietrowicz, Sandra Poplin, and Lynne Gist; sons-in-law Phil Ward and George Poplin; granddaughter Melissa Okyere and husband Charles; granddaughter Nicole Hurst and husband Bo; great grandson, Zane Hurst and another expected grandson; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 17, 2021 at 12:30 pm at Barnes Friederich Funeral Home 1820 S. Douglas Blvd. Midwest City, OK
Interment will follow at Arlington Memory Gardens in Midwest City, OK Flowers and condolences may be sent to the funeral home In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Karen Gist Carr Scholarship may be sent First Christian Church 11950 E Reno Ave, Midwest City, OK 73130
