Burkett Edison Massey, 87, of Waco, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2007, at the Temple VA Hospital. Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at Wilkirson- Hatch-Bailey Chapel with Chaplain Curtis Holland and Mitch Parrish officiating. Burial will follow at Stanford Chapel Cemetery.

Burkett was born in Mullin, Texas, to the late A. T. and Stella Mae Massey. In 1939, he married Mildred Hulsey. Even his final few days with us his face would light up when she would enter his hospital room. They have been married 68 years. Burkett loved God and his country; he retired from the U.S. Navy as a Chief Petty Officer and a Decorated War Veteran of two wars. He helped defend his country in World War II aboard ship. He answered the call of duty again in Vietnam aboard a River Patrol Boat. He received many decorations and citations during a quarter century of service for God and his country in the U.S. Navy.

He loved his family; taking his grandsons, Bill, Gregg, Jeff, Bobby and Burke hunting and fishing, and teaching them other skills and sharing life's lessons with them. He always made time to enjoy his granddaughter, Cristy, and spend special time with her. He cherished his six great-grandchildren, Ross, Arden, Trey, Christopher, Cade, and Lauren, spending time with them and showing them special attention. His life was all about family.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Jeffery Michael Wetterman; brother, Joe Massey; and sister, Mae Kardash.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred Massey; daughter, Della Wetterman and husband, Bill Sr., and their children, Bill Jr. and wife, Lex, of McKinney, Gregg Wetterman and wife, Jennie, of Waco; his son, Bobby G. Massey and wife, Vicki, and their children, Bobby Massey Jr., and wife, Becky, Burkett Massey, and Cristy Massey Prud'homme, of Shreveport, La.; great-grandchildren, Ross, Arden, Trey and Christopher Wetterman, and Cade Massey and Lauren Prud'homme.
