James married Mary Ellen Duncan on 12 December 1859 in Louisa County, Iowa. They had one son, William James Harvey Robertson (1860-1895).

James Robertson (26, nativity Ohio), a resident of Columbus City, Iowa enlisted as a Private in Company C, Eighth Iowa Infantry on 10 August 1861 at Washington, Iowa. He was mustered in on 31 August 1861. He went missing in action and was taken prisoner on 06 April 1862 at Shiloh, Tennessee.
