The Honorable Arthur Edsel Neubauer, a retired lawyer and administrative law judge for the Social Security Administration, died December 21, 2020, of natural causes at home in Marco Island, Florida. He was born on October 31, 1924, to Margaret (Whalen) and Arthur Neubauer in Detroit, Michigan, the youngest of five children.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran who attended the University of Miami completing a joint degree with the law school there.

His began his professional career as a special agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation after graduating from the FBI Academy. From there he moved into labor relations law with the National Labor Relations Board. He subsequently moved to the Social Security Administration as an administrative law judge for over 35 years, first in Albany, and then in Roanoke, Va.

He was a member of the New York, Massachusetts, Virginia and Florida Bar Associations, as well as the Association of Federal Judges.

After retiring, he opened his own law practice in Roanoke - helping residents rightfully receive their Social Security disability benefits.

Arthur met the love of his life, Jerlene Jones, while living in the Albany area. They were together for 40 years. Since retiring, they have enjoyed spending summers in Santa Fe, NM, and winters in Marco Island, FL.

A son, Peter O. Neubauer of Libertyville, IL, predeceased him.

In addition to his wife, Jerlene, he is survived by three daughters, Margaret Moore of Roanoke; Anne Knowler of Bel Air, MD; and Lili Schroppe of Ridgefield, CT.; three step-sons, Gregory, Keith and Bradley Lewis; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
