James Henry Painter, Jr., 88, widower of Elizabeth "Liz" (Smith) Painter of Staunton, passed away, Wednesday, June 23, 2021 at Augusta Health in Fishersville.

Mr. Painter was born in Staunton, Virginia on February 7, 1933, a son of the late James Henry Painter, Sr. and Genevie Irene (Fitzgerald) Painter.

James was a veteran of the United States Marines Corps and a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church. He was a past Governor of the Lions Club and was inaugurated in Japan and was also a member of the VFW.

In addition to his wife of sixty-one years and parents, Mr. Painter was
preceded in death by a sister, Katherine Thacker.

Surviving is a son, Ronald Curtis "Ron" Painter and his wife Donna of Douglasville, Georgia; a daughter, Cynthia "Cindy" Painter of Wytheville, Virginia; two grandchildren, Ashley McElreath and her husband Mark and Joshua Painter; and great-grandson, Jackson McElreath.

The family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Sunday, June 27, 2021 in the Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory.

A Celebration of Life will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 28, 2021 at Covenant Presbyterian Church by Reverend John Peterson.

Burial will follow in the Oaklawn Memory Gardens.

Per church regulations, masks will be required for the service.

It is suggested those desiring make memorial contributions to the Alzheimer's Association, 355 Rio Road, Suite 102, Charlottesville, Virginia 22901.
