Esther Medenwald Gerber, daughter of Robert and Emma (Buhr) Medenwald, passed away peacefully at the Lutheran Home in Arlington Heights, Ill. on March 15, 2009, on her 92nd birthday.

Esther grew up in Reedsburg and attended St. Peter's Parochial School and Reedsburg High School. After graduation and some additional course work, she became the secretary to high school superintendent Normington. Eventually she moved to Washington D.C. to become the personal secretary to Senator Alexander Wiley for his two terms of office. After his retirement, Esther worked for Green Bay representative Byrnes. During these years Esther married W. Hutchinson, who died a few years thereafter while on a business trip in Japan.

Her love of travel led her to live and work in Madrid and Rome and ultimately to travel to Japan, Africa, the Middle East and extensively in Europe.

In 1968 Esther married Robert E. Gerber of Bayside, New York whom she met at the wedding of Esther's nephew, Ron, and Robert's daughter, Gisela. They lived in retirement in Bayside for 37 years, during which time Esther enjoyed being active in the Redeemer Lutheran Church and planning their annual trips to Germany, San Francisco and Wisconsin to visit family and friends. After her husband's death in 2005 Esther moved to Illinois to be closer to family.

Esther never had children but is mourned by her brother Robert Medenwald of Madison Wisconsin, 12 nieces and nephews and a stepdaughter and son.

A memorial service will be held in St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Reedsburg on Saturday, March 28, 2009, at 11 a.m., followed immediately by a luncheon at the church and graveside services at St. Peter's cemetery at 2 p.m. The Farber Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
