He was the son of James Mathis and Rhoda Monk. He was married to Martha King.

He enlisted Co. I 50 GA Infantry, CSA on 9 May 1862 at Nashville, GA. He was left sick at Shepherdstown, WV, and died there on 19 September 1862.

What became of his wife after the 1860 census is not certain. Their children John Tyler Mathis and Marion Mathis were living in the household of Bryant J Roberts in the 1870 Lowndes County, GA census. Bryant J Roberts was Malon Mathis' brother-in-law.
