Descended from Pardon Tillinghast of Providence, Nicholas lived his early life in Providence, where he served as Town Clerk (1755-1758). He later became Lieutenant Governor and served as a judge. A follower of Sandemanian religious sect, whose focal belief was obedience to rulers, Nicholas was a tory. Consequently, he was temporarily imprisoned during the Revolutionary War. Eventually he came to Taunton, where he was a merchant, and where he also served as postmaster. His first wife was Joanna Jenckes and his second wife was Ruth Phillips.
