The Buffalo Commerical, Buffalo, NY, June 20, 1893
Mr. John J. Guernsey, one of the oldest citizens of Buffalo, died this morning, at the residence of his son-in-law, Wm. H. Ellis, No. 380 Hudson street, after a short illess at the advanced age of 92 years. Mr. Guernsey was born March 9th, 1801, in Dutchess county, N.Y., and came to Buffalo in 1832. He engaged in the lumber business in Erie, Cattaraugus and Chautauqua counties, his residence most of the time being in Irving, Erie county. In 1842 he disposed of his lumber business and purchased a large farm at Leon, Cattaraugus county. He followed the avocation of farming until 1850, when he removed to Randolph, Cattaraugus county, and had not been actively engaged in business since, residing at different times with his children, at Randolph, Buffalo, and MCPherson, Kansas. Mr. Guernsey returned to Buffalo about four weeks ago from Kansas with his son-in-law, Mr Ellis, and stood the long journey remarkably well for a man of his years. ... His surviving children are Mrs. P.T. Camp of Buffalo, Mrs. Warren Dow of Randolph, Mrs. John C. Hamilton of McPherson, Kansas, and Mrs. Wm. H Ellis of Buffalo. He also leaves a number of grand-children and great-grand-children.... interment will be at Randolph.
