The following obituary is provided thanks to the work of John Smolarek.

The Tuscaloosa News, (Wednesday), October 16, 1940:

"John Nix (Nicholas) Burkhalter, 65, died at his home near Gordo Tuesday night after an illness lasting 4 months. He had resided in the Gordo community all his life. Mr. Burkhalter was a member of the Shiloh Baptist Church.

Surviving are 8 sons, W.L. (William Luther) J.F.(James Floyd), J.W.(Johnnie W.), G.L.(Gilbert Lee), A.M.(Albert Bascom), E.M.(Edgar Marlin), R.E.(Raymond Edwin), and W. R. (Wilford R.) Burkhalter and four daughters, Mrs. Lillie Miller, Mrs. Clara May Hayes, and Misses Claudine and Minnie Lou Burkhalter.
