John L. Bailey was born in Choctaw County. John, Mary and their 4 children, at time of his death, were living in "Melvin" which is on the Mississippi and Alabama states line, and well South and West of Butler, Butler is almost right in the center of the county.

Birth information for John comes from the 1850 Census for Choctaw County, AL. Death date and location come from the Confederate Pension Records for John's wife, Mary E. Seale Bailey. The same date and location were stated twice by Mary on 2 applications from the 1920's.

On Ancestry, Ann Edwards states that the story goes, that John was on his way home from a field during a thunderstorm, and was struck by lighting as was told by one of his grandsons. According to the attached obituary for John, he died at home.

On Ancestry, someone as stated that John L. Bailey was buried in a Methodist Church
Cemetery. I had the recent good fortune to come in contact with Rev. Lyle Meador of
Desotoville, who is not only a local minister, but a member of the Masonic Lodge in Butler, Alabama, but also a big history buff, and to me, a wonderful local historian. Rev.
Lyle was born and raised in Desotoville, and from what I understand, his family go back
decades in the county. I asked Rev. Lyle for some help with a Methodist Church and Cemetery from 1880 in Melvin or Isney, and this is what he emailed back to me 14 Jun 2021: Quote "John Bailey's wife, Elizabeth Seale Bailey is buried in the Isney Cemetery beside the Baptist Church, and it's likely that he is too but the marker has been lost to time. The church and cemetery there go back to the 1840's.....the Methodist church in Melvin was not established until the late 1880's-1890's and I'm not sure if they even have a cemetery. Melvin and Isney are nowhere near Butler". Stop quote.

I have contacted another long time historian in Butler for some additional help and plan on calling the Baptist Church in Insey to see if they have any church records back to the 1880's.

PROBLEM:
One additional problem with John L. Bailey and his family is on the 1880 census. If you look and read it closely, that census was for "CLARKE COUNTY, MISSISSIPPI"!!! Why??Simple, Clarke County, Mississippi is just across the state line from Melvin, Choctaw County, AL. How or why that happened is today a blatant mistake by the census taker.
He must have got lost!! In any event, there are those on Ancestry and here on Find A Grave that have most all of John's family members being born and dying in Clarke County, Alabama, which is not accurate. Please watch your records, they can trip you if you don't do a little more digging!!

I just received word from Jean Lofton the church clerk of the Insey Baptist Church and who is also on the Cemetery Association, that John Lewis Bailey-according to the cemetery records, is not buried there. So until I can do more research and hopefully find the burial location for John, his burial site is: UNKNOWN.
