Jimmy served with the A Company 3rd Battalion, 506th Infantry (Currahees) of the 101st Airborne Division in Vietnam, and participated in the Cambodian incursion of May 1970. 'Currahee' is a Cherokee word meaning 'we stand alone'. This is the same unit made famous by the book and movie 'Band of Brothers'
The day Jimmy died was to have been his last day in the Bush. He was killed while walking point for his unit, and the helicopter which would have taken him to Base Camp to start the journey home, instead retrieved his body.
Jimmy was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the Air Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Ribbon, The Vietnam Service Medal, the national Defense Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, The Sharpshooter Badge with Automatic Rifle Bar and the Marksman Badge with Machine Gun and Rifle Bars.
HE IS STILL REMEMBERED, AND MISSED, BY HIS FAMILY AND HIS FELLOW SCREAMING EAGLES.
