AGED MAN STRUCK; IS INSTANTLY KILLED

CHAS. ANDERSON OF OLD PEOPLES HOME VICTIM OF TRAGEDY

Charles Anderson, 80 years of age, was ground to death Saturday afternoon when struck by a fast freight on the Milwaukee crossing just east of the Hillsdale school house, a mile and a half east of Madrid. Death was instantaneous. His left leg was completely severed just below the hip, the right leg broken in two places, both arms broken, a bad wound inflicted on his scalp, and his face cut and bruised.

The accident occurred about 3:30. Mr. Anderson who has been living at the Lutheran Old Peoples Home of this city, had been to the home of Theodore and Joseph Berg, old friends, east of Madrid, for dinner, and was returning. He was quite deaf and evidently did not hear the train approaching from the east. He reached the crossing just in time to be struck.

The fireman and engineer noticed him but too late to stop the train. The pilot struck him, carrying him some little distance before the body dropped. Nearly twenty cars went over him before the train could be brought to a stop.

The tragedy was witnessed by Andrew Bergeson's crew of section men. They at once notified A. M. Sundberg, the undertaker, and Mr. Sundberg notified Coroner Jones at Boone. The coroner drove down but the circumstances surrounding the death was so evident that no inquest was held.

The funeral services over the remains of the aged man were held from the Old Peoples Home Saturday afternoon in charge of Rev. Clauson, pastor of the St. John's Lutheran church. Interment was made in the Cassel cemetery.

Mr. Anderson entered the Home about eighteen months ago. He was born in Sweden and came to this country 47 years ago. He was 80 years, 10 months and 5 days of age. His wife died several years ago. He has no near relatives in this country so far as known. C. E. Peterson is a distant relative. A sister lives in Sweden.
