Winfred Cooksey was born in 1829 in Kentucky. She married John Wesley Carter
September 11, 1851 in Lawrence County, Kentucky. John was born July 1829 in Russell County, Virginia, son of Thomas Carter and Katherine Burton.

John served in the Civil War as a Private, Company I, 68th Kentucky Infantry. He enlisted May 21, 1864 for 30 days. His occupation is listed as a farmer, age 32 years. His physical characteristics are listed as 5' 10" in height with blue eyes and light hair.

Winifred died July 24, 1874 in Lawrence County, Kentucky. She and John's eight children were bom on Blaine in Lawrence County. In addition to a daughter Trinvilla Frances Carter (1854-1876), these are the other children of Winifred and John W. Carter I have found:

Mary Louisa Carter (1853-1880)
Nancy Elizabeth Carter (1856-1890)
Geona Carter (1858-1878)
Leander Cal(l)ahan Carter (1860-1878)
Cambridge Carter (1861-1939)
George W. Carter (1864-1952)

John married second Mahala (Halie) Carter October 30, 1883 in Lawrence County at the
home of his brother Jacob Franklin Carter in Lawrence County. Halie's age is listed as about 36
years. The 1900 Lawrence County census lists her birth as March 1845 but she is not listed in the
1850 census so she may have been born in 1851. She was the daughter of David Carter and
Malinda Richards. She married first David Foster February 12, 1878 in Lawrence County. John
and Halie had a son Arley Carter born March 1 887.

John died after 1900 in Lawrence County. Halie died November 9, 1903.
