April 7, 1914 - July 3, 2001 Director of the Washington State Traffic Commission from 1970 to 1977, Clifford E. Aden, died in Port Angeles at the age of 87.Mr. Aden was born in Walla Walla to John E. and Freda G. (Bryant) Aden, and attended Whitman College. On November 11, 1938, Mr. Aden married Dorothy E. King in Seattle. He joined the Washington State Patrol in the Port Angeles District on August 17, 1937, where he served until 1957, with the exception of two years in Shelton from 1940 to 1942. He also attended a six-month fellowship at Northwestern University Traffic Institute in Evanston, Ill., from which he graduated in June 1946. After serving in Port Angeles, he was transferred to Olympia and ultimately rose to the rank of major before retiring on July 31, 1970. He served as director of Washington State Traffic Safety Commission from Ausust 1970 to July 1977, under Govs. Dan Evans and Dixy Lee Ray. His seven years of service in the commission saw many improvements and earned the praise of the two governors before his retirement, with a total of 40 years service to the state of Washington. In 1988, the Adens returned to Port Angeles, where he belonged to the Masons and the Elks. He died peacefully after a short illness.Mr. Aden is survived by his wife in Port Angeles; daughter and son-in-law Nancy and Robert Felix of Auckland, New Zealand; sisters Wanda Sutich of Olympia and Marion Culley of Weston, Ore.; and grandson Michael Felix of Auckland.No formal services will be held.
